Special Birthdays on January 2nd, 2010 4 Comments

Basic Equipment Needed
Cutting Matt Craft knife
Metal ruler Scoring board/ bone folder
Scissors Paper trimmer
Silicone glue/ PVA glue
Double-sided tape/foam pads

Materials and Measurements.
4 A4 Card in cream
3 A4 Card in red
Scrap gold card 10cm x 10cm
Heart template (made by WS Designs – available from local craft shops)
Backing paper pink tones
Variety of small artificial flowers and foliage (available from craft shops or cake decorating shops)
Florist tape – green
Gold peel offs – borders, greetings, numbers and flowers
Red ribbon. – .5cm x 10cm and 1.5cm x 40cm

With this card you can either have the heart plain or with a number on as I have. I have put in both options.

Step One – Plain
Score and fold the card in half place the template onto the card with the cut away shape to the fold. Draw round the heart cut out and mark at the notches top and bottom turn the card over and repeat on the other side. Then cut out the heart shape and save for decorating the front of the card.

step-1a
Step Two – Special birthday or wedding anniversary with a number required,
Make the template first – Follow step one to where you need to cut it out,  place the number into the heart shape   use a scrap piece of paper or card and draw on the number you need, make sure that it is big enough to reach the top and bottom of the heart and that the heart doesn’t lose it’s shape, ie at the top centre point, once you are happy with the pattern copy it onto a piece of card and cut out the pattern this will be your template.

step-2

Step Three
Take your template and draw round the shape onto the red card draw it on  the back of the card so that the pencil lines don’t show.

step-3

Carefully cut out the pattern with a craft knife or a pair of scissors. Score the card where indicated by the notches. Fold these sections back toward the centre fold. Sorry the picture is not very clear.

step-4

Step Four
I cut the 21 out of gold card and stuck onto the red cut out 21, trim so that they match perfectly and stuck it with silicone glue (PVA could also be used if you prefer)

step-4a

I actually made the card harder for myself by doing the 21 later it is better doing it at this stage.

Step Five
Score and fold A4 cream card then cut the backing paper at least 18cm x 21cm fold in half as well. Place on the inside of the card with double-sided tape do one side at a time it needs to fit well.

step5

Tip – Once you have placed the double-sided tape on the reverse side of the backing paper lift just a small piece up and fold over do this on each side, then when placing onto your card you can easily adjust to get it right before peeling the rest of the tape away getting a perfect position every time.

step-6

Step Six
Repeat the process to attach the pop out section to the main card making sure that each section is perfectly aligned and level.

step7

step-8

Step Seven
Cut 2 panels 6cm x 19.5cm and attach them to the inside of the card each side of the heart.

Step--9

Step-10

Decorate the panels with peel offs I used straight borders for the edges and flower borders for the top bottom and left-hand panel,  leave the right – hand side for the verse and message.

Place a border peel off around the edge of the heart (use the same in the front). Decorate the rest of the inside with wine glasses, champagne bottle and stars.

Step-10a

Add the greeting typed out from the computer or your own to fit the panel on the side.

step-10b

Step Eight
Decorate the front of the card by using the same size heart from the centre if you haven’t put a number in you can use the heart from the cut out. If you have a number then you will need a piece of red card about 15cm x 15cm for another heart. I have used 2 hearts one in the red and one in cream cut .5cm smaller.

Step-11

Attach these in the centre of the card with PVA or silicone glue then place a peel off border around the edges of each heart.
Place the greeting at the top of the card and 21st at the bottom left- hand corner and a rose on the right.

Step-12

Step Nine
To make the spray – The flowers and foliage I used I brought from my local cake decorating store, craft shop and also from my local 99p store (amazing things you find in these shops)
Step-13

As a rule when making up a spray you need odd numbers of any flowers. Start with the fern or foliage at the top coming a little down add a rose bud using your florist tape wind it round the stem to secure them together twice round will be enough, add a filler flower and then a main rose, place buds to the outside, filler flowers and foliage behind and the main roses in the centre tape down after each section when satisfied with the shape of your spray cut of the surplus with wire cutters and cover the base with tape and using red ribbon tie a bow at the base.

Step-13a
Attach to the card with foam pads

Step-13b

Step Ten
For the greeting you could either type out a greeting from the computer and place it on the right panel or write your own.

Step-14

PRESENTATION BOX

Step One
Take the card you have made and place it on the left-hand corner of your red or cream card. Measure twice the depth of the box plus .5cm.

Step-15
So for our box depth of 1.5cm mark out 3.5cm with a pencil, do the same length ways mark again and cut.
Do exactly the same with the other piece of card using the first card as a template, so they are both the same size.

Step two
To make the box base – If using the Crafters Companion Top Score Multiboard turn it over on the back it has groves especially designed for making boxes. On this board one side is for the base the other when turned around 180º is for the lid. They are clearly marked so you should be able to tell which is which.
Place the card against the box base rim score along the first line and repeat on all sides.

Step-16

Step three
In each of the corners where the lines intersect, cut a small V shape notch, make sure it’s along the score line and that the diagonal is cut into the excess corner piece.

Step-17
To assemble your box, fold the flaps inside of the edge and glue them (with PVA) to the inside edge of each corner hold in place with a paper clip until glue dries.

Step-17a

Step four
Repeat all of the steps for the lid but turn the board around 180º and place the card to the box lid rim.

Step five

Decorate the lid.

I cut 2 hearts one red, one cream the same as on the card. Attach the hearts to the lid and place the same border around the edges. Place a peel off spray of roses in the right-hand corner, greetings on the top and 21 in the heart. Finish of by placing a red ribbon around the whole box.
